Single Crochet Stitch Abbreviation in US Patterns: sc

UK Equivalent Stitch: double crochet (dc)

A single crochet stitch is the shortest of the basic crochet stitches and is always accompanied by a single chain stitch at the end or beginning of a row to bring the work up to the height for a row of single crochet stitches.

A single crochet stitch creates a tight fabric which is ideal for belts, bags and anything needing strength or tightness.

This stitch can also be used to create a rug or as an edging to finish off a piece of work.

To crochet a single crochet stitch use the following instructions:

After having made a foundation chain, let’s start the 1st row:

1. Place your hook into the top loop from front to back of the second chain from the hook
2. Wrap the yarn over the hook
3. Draw the yarn through the chain stitch
4. Wrap the yarn over the hook
5. Draw the yarn through both loops on the hook

You have just created a single crochet stitch.

Crochet a single crochet stitch into each chain stitch along the foundation chain using the instructions above until you reach the end of the foundation chain. The 1st step above will change to – ‘Place your hook into the next chain stitch’ for all following stitches after the first stitch on the 1st row.

Once you have completed the above, let’s move onto the 2nd row:
1. Turn your work
2. Make 1 chain stitch (this is called a ‘crochet turning chain’)
3. Place your hook into both loops from front to back of the first stitch
4. Wrap the yarn over the hook
5. Draw the yarn through both stitch loops
6. Wrap the yarn over the hook
7. Draw the yarn through both loops on the hook

You have just created a single crochet stitch on the second row.

Crochet a single crochet stitch into each stitch until you reach the end by repeating steps 3 to 7. Step 3 will change to – ‘Place your hook into both loops from front to back of the next stitch’ after you finish the first stitch on the 2nd row.

Note: When crocheting your last stitch, don’t single crochet into the chain 1 turning chain that you created on the previous row.

Repeat the steps for Row 2 to continue on making rows and you will get a fabric made of single crochet stitches.
